Lead poisoning is a serious concern for parents because it can cause developmental disabilities in their children. Lead poisoning is determined by the lead levels in a person's blood. Lead has no function in the body and the ideal blood lead level should be zero. Health officials will be concerned when the blood level is above 15 and any level above 30 will require treatment. Individuals that have a blood level above 70 can cause seizure or maybe death. Individuals can be exposed to lead in several ways. While the Environmental Protection Agency banned lead based paint in 1978, many older homes still have the paint. Exhaust fumes from vehicles can leak lead into the soil. Workers who work with metal may be exposed to toxic levels of lead. One of the prominent symptoms of lead poisoning is a bluish tint to gums. Unfortunately, this is a sign that lead levels are already high.
