Hazardous Material

Most industrial facilities use some type of hazardous material. Since most of these facilities must transport these materials, accidents have happened all across the country that mainly involve train derailments and tanker wrecks on the highway. In many cases residents near the wreck are evacuated because most of these chemicals can be dangerous if leaked in large amounts. Most county governments and state emergency agencies have emergency personnel trained to deal with hazardous material. Accidents involving hazardous material on the roads and rail lines happen often. In August 2009, several hundred residents in Summers County, West Virginia were evacuated when 32,000 pounds of uranium hexafluoride was spilled after a tanker accident on the interstate. Exposure to the chemical by air could have been fatal. No one was reported injured. The U.S. Department of Transportation and the Pipeline and Hazardous Material Safety Administration Office of Hazardous Materials Safety (OHMS) are responsible for investigating these accidents.
