Formaldehyde is used for a variety of purposes including embalming and it is in many building materials. While many people are exposed to formaldehyde and experience no adverse effects, some suffer from formaldehyde poisoning. Formaldehyde is also a known carcinogen and has been linked to leukemia and nasal cancer. Both of these cancers can be fatal. Almost everyone is exposed to the substance because it is found in many types of glue and in building materials. The symptoms of formaldehyde exposure depend on the dosage, the exposure and the individual. When formaldehyde is emitted through the air and the exposure is a small dose, people may have headaches and nose bleeds. Exposure to high does in the air can cause burning of the mucous membrane, bronchitis and pneumonia. Those who are sensitive to formaldehyde may have asthmas attacks. Exposure through the eyes may be painful and if serious enough can cause vision loss. Skin exposure to formaldehyde usually causes dermatitis.
