Formaldehyde Exposure

Formaldehyde was officially listed as a carcinogen in 2004 by the International Agency for Research on Cancer. Long-term formaldehyde exposure has been linked to nasal cancer and leukemia. Those who are exposed to it for a short period of time, such as biology students dissecting a frog preserved in formaldehyde, may have not adverse reaction. Others may experience coughing, nausea, skin irritation and wheezing. Formaldehyde exposure can happen in the home or in the workplace. In the 1970s, Urea-formaldehyde foam insulation was popular. However since studies have shown the ill effects of the substance on health, those insulation has not been widely used. Formaldehyde is commonly found in building products and in household products. Morticians use formaldehyde to preserve bodies for burial and are routinely subjected to formaldehyde exposure. Many types of glue also contain formaldehydes. Victims of Hurricane Katrina sued the Federal Emergency Management Agency, claiming they were exposed to high levels of formaldehyde in trailers provided as shelter by the government.

Fast Facts
