Perhaps no one person made environmental law seem as exciting and as glamorous as Erin Brokovich. The California woman spearheaded a lawsuit from residents in Kings County California against a local utility that was dumping chemicals into the soil and water and making area residents sick. The plaintiffs won a $333 million settlement and Brokovich had a movie made about her life. Environmental attorneys tackles companies that could be breaking laws concerning water quality, air quality, wastewater treatment, hazardous materials and pesticides, just to name a few. Most of these laws involve regulations by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). The assertion of many environmental attorneys is that these laws are not enforced enough. The lack of oversight leads to poor drinking water, air quality and contaminated food. Unfortunately, by the time many of the violations are brought to light, many people are ill from the effects. That leads to environmental lawsuits where those affected can recoup medical expenses.
