Chromium Toxicity

Chromium VI, also known as hexavalent chromium, can be extremely toxic to humans. Almost every health and environmental agency has listed hexavalent chromium as a known carcinogen that can lead to lung cancer if inhaled. Chromium toxicity has also been found when the element seeps into the soil or water supply in areas near industries that use the element. Since chromium is used in many industrial processes, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) has set limits as to how much exposure is healthy for workers. This was the result petitions and lawsuits filed against OSHA because the agency was not setting limits on worker's exposure to the element. The Environmental Protection Agency has also set limits to how much chromium can be found in drinking water. After hexavalent chromium was identified as the cause of several cancer cases and illnesses in Kings County, California in the 1990s, health agencies have been studying further regulations.
