Chromium Pollution

Chromium can pollute water ways, soil and even the air. The effects of chromium pollution can be deadly. Hexavalent chromium is a known carcinogen and exposure increases one's risk for lung cancer. The element can also cause respiratory problems if inhaled that could lead to a hole in the nasal septum. In 1993, the largest settlement for a direct lawsuit was made because of exposure to hexavalent chromium. The Pacific Gas and Electric Company paid $333 million dollars to residents of Hinkley, California after it was determined the company allowed hexavalent chromium to seep into the water supply. Residents in the area were diagnosed with cancer as a result of the chromium pollution. The case was made into a movie, "Erin Brockovich," who was the woman responsible for helping the residents win the settlement. Brockovich has since been involved with several other communities concerned about chromium pollution in their area.
