Chromium Contamination

While chromium is naturally found in the environment, large levels of industrial waste that contains hexavalent chromium can cause serious health problems. This was the case in Hinkley, California in the 90s when the drinking water had high levels of chromium contamination. In June of 2009, a similar problem was found in Midland, Texas. In Davenport, California officials found high levels of hexavalent chromium in the air near an elementary school. Hexavalent chromium contamination concerns health officials because exposure causes health risks. Hexavalent chromium has been identified as a human carcinogen by the Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS), the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). Breathing in high levels of chromium can cause problems with the nose that include sneezing, nosebleeds and holes in the nasal septum. This usually occurs in workers who are deal with the substance on a daily basis.
