Benzene Exposure

Benzene is one of many substances that occurs naturally but is known to cause health problems in large doses. Health officials have linked the use of benzene to leukemia deaths because the chemical attacks the blood. Benzene exposure in glue, wax, paint or detergent has been linked to cancer cases. Since benzene is found in many glues and rubber cement, many teenagers sniff it. But benzene exposure when sniffing a glue-like substance can lead to death in some cases.

Other ill effects of benzene exposure according to health officials include a weakened immune system and problems with kidneys, lung and liver. Even exposure to low levels of benzene can cause dizziness, drowsiness, headaches and even unconsciousness. If benzene is leaked into the air in high levels, health officials will order anyone in the area to remain indoors and may even evacuate the area. If benzene exposure is indoors, officials will evacuate the building to minimize exposure.
