Benzene

You can't see benzene but you may recognize it by its strong, sweet odor. Benzene is extremely flammable. Rubber cement, paint strippers and spot removers all contain benzene. Benzene has been noted as the cause of many health problems. In 1970, health officials linked the use of benzene to leukemia deaths. Exposure to benzene in glue, wax, paint or detergent has been linked to cancer. Breathing in benzene, for example when sniffing a glue-like substance that has high levels of benzene, can lead to death. Other ill effects of benzene include a weakened immune system and can affect the kidneys, lung and liver. Even exposure to low levels of benzene can cause dizziness, drowsiness, headaches and even unconsciousness. Despite warnings about the chemicals adverse effects on health, benzene is still used by many industrial manufacturers. More than 238,000 people work around products in industrial settings that contain benzene every day.
