Asbestos Cancer

Asbestos exposure causes two different types of cancer. Mesothelioma is a cancer that is specifically tied to asbestos and involves the lining around the lungs. Asbestos exposure is also linked to lung cancer. People who smoke or use tobacco products and are exposed to asbestos are at a greater risk for these cancers. Both of these asbestos cancers are deadly with many patients dying within a month of their diagnosis. Symptoms of asbestos exposure include problems breathing including wheezing or hoarseness; a persistent cough that won't get better; coughing up blood; difficulty swallowing, swelling in the neck or face; weight loss; fatigue and anemia. Because of the risks of cancer from asbestos exposure, the federal government has limited the use of the substance, which used to be in several products and building materials. Since 1979, asbestos has not been used in hair dryers. Many buildings still have the substance, resulting in the continuing exposure of thousands of people.
